How to reach Agra from Delhi — train, bus, car or flight
There are four ways to reach Agra from Delhi: train, bus, private car and flight. The train is fastest and cheapest for a solo traveller. A private car is the best choice for three or four people, for door-to-door travel, and if you want to stop at Mathura, Vrindavan or Fatehpur Sikri on the way. Here is the honest comparison, including when a cab is the wrong choice.
The comparison
| Option | Time | Indicative cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gatimaan Express | 1 hr 40 min | ₹750 – ₹1,500 per person | Solo, fastest, no luggage |
| Shatabdi / Taj Express | 2 – 2.5 hr | ₹500 – ₹1,200 per person | Solo or couple, budget |
| Volvo bus | 4 – 5 hr | ₹400 – ₹700 per person | Cheapest, flexible timing |
| Private cab (sedan) | 3.5 – 4 hr | ₹2,800 total | 3–4 people, luggage, door-to-door |
| Private cab (Innova) | 3.5 – 4 hr | ₹4,200 total | Family, extra luggage, comfort |
| Flight | 1 hr + 2 hr transfers | ₹3,000+ per person | Almost nobody — see below |
Train: fastest, but the station is not the Taj
The Gatimaan Express leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin around 8:10 AM and reaches Agra Cantt in about 100 minutes. The Shatabdi and Taj Express take a little longer. Book on IRCTC well in advance, especially for weekends and the October–March season.
The catch is the last mile. Agra Cantt is 6–8 km from the Taj Mahal, and the prepaid taxi or auto queue there adds 20–30 minutes and ₹200–400. If you are carrying luggage, that transfer is the part people forget when they compare train versus cab.
Bus: cheapest, slowest
Volvo and UPSRTC buses leave from ISBT Kashmiri Gate and Anand Vihar, take four to five hours, and cost ₹400–700. They are reliable and frequent, but they drop you at the Agra bus stand, not your hotel, and you lose the ability to stop anywhere on the way.
Private car: when it actually makes sense
A sedan carries four people for ₹2,800 one-way — about ₹700 per person, which is competitive with the train once you add the Agra Cantt transfer. The real advantage is that the car starts at your hotel and ends at the Taj gate, and you can stop at Mathura, Vrindavan, Fatehpur Sikri or a highway dhaba without re-planning.
For a same-day return, a car is clearly better: you keep your luggage in the vehicle, you are not tied to a return train time, and you can leave Agra when you are actually finished rather than when the schedule says.
Flight: usually not worth it
Agra has limited commercial service and the airport is 13 km from the city. By the time you check in, fly, land and transfer, you have spent more time than the train or car, for more money. The only sensible use is a charter or a connection through Delhi for an international traveller — and even then, a car from IGI is simpler.
What we recommend
- 1 traveller, no luggage: Gatimaan Express.
- 2 travellers, light luggage: train, or a sedan if you want door-to-door.
- 3–4 travellers: sedan cab — cheaper per person than the train once transfers are counted.
- Family with luggage or elderly parents: Innova or Crysta.
- Same-day Taj trip: car, every time.
- Want Mathura, Vrindavan or Fatehpur Sikri: car, because no train or bus covers all three.
