Delhi to Agra by car — route, tolls and stops
The Delhi to Agra drive is one of the easiest in North India: 233 km, almost all of it on the six-lane Yamuna Expressway. This guide covers the exact route, the toll plazas, where to stop, where to park at the Taj, and what a one-way cab costs.
The route, step by step
- Delhi → Noida: take the DND Flyway or the Noida–Greater Noida Expressway depending on where you start.
- Noida → Greater Noida → Yamuna Expressway entry at Sector 168 / Jewar Road.
- Yamuna Expressway: 165 km of six-lane toll road, three plazas (Jewar, Mathura, Agra).
- Exit at Agra → Fatehabad Road → Taj Mahal East Gate or your hotel.
- Total: about 233 km from central Delhi.
Tolls and stops
Budget about ₹415 in tolls for a car on the full expressway, plus UP state tax at the border. The three plazas take card and cash, but the queues are shorter with a FASTag — our cars all have one, which is why we do not ask you to pay tolls in cash.
The cleanest food stops are the Jewar plaza (about 45 minutes out) and the Mathura plaza (about 2 hours out). Both have washrooms, tea and packaged food. Avoid the unmarked dhabas right at the Agra exit if you are short on time.
Parking at the Taj Mahal
Cars cannot go to the Taj gate. You park at Shilpgram or the East Gate parking, then take a golf cart or walk 10–15 minutes to the ticket counter. Parking is ₹50–100 for a car. Your driver will wait at the parking area and pick you up at the same spot — agree on the meeting point before you walk in.
The Taj is closed every Friday. Last entry is about 30 minutes before sunset. Sunrise entry is the quietest and the light is best.
Driving tips
- Leave by 5:30–6:00 AM to clear Delhi before traffic and reach the Taj at opening.
- Keep the speed limit — the expressway has speed cameras and a strict 100 km/h cap.
- Fill fuel before entering the expressway; stations on it are sparse and priced higher.
- Carry ID for everyone — it is checked at monument tickets and sometimes at toll plazas.
- In December–January, check fog warnings before an early start.
What a one-way cab costs
A one-way Delhi to Agra sedan starts at ₹2,800, an Innova at ₹4,200 and a Crysta at ₹4,900. That covers the car, fuel and driver. Tolls and state tax are at actuals, or included in the all-inclusive fare. A round trip is roughly 1.8× the one-way fare, not double, because you are not paying for the driver's empty return.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Yamuna Expressway the best route?
Yes, for almost every starting point in Delhi NCR. The older Mathura Road route is shorter on paper but much slower.
How many toll plazas are there?
Three on the Yamuna Expressway: Jewar, Mathura and Agra.
Can I drive to the Taj Mahal gate?
No. Park at Shilpgram or East Gate and take a golf cart or walk.
Is night driving safe?
The expressway is lit and patrolled, but we recommend daytime for a first trip.
Do your cars have FASTag?
Yes, all of them, so toll queues are shorter.
Can I stop at Mathura on the way?
Yes, it is a short detour and adds about 1.5–2 hours.
