Jaipur to Ajmer distance — and how to add Pushkar

Jaipur to Ajmer is 135 km by road on NH-48, a 2 hour 15 minute drive. It is one of the easiest day trips from Jaipur: leave at 6 AM, reach the dargah before the crowd, and add Pushkar — 11 to 15 km beyond Ajmer — before returning the same evening. The train also runs this route in about 2 to 2.5 hours, but it drops you at Ajmer Junction, still 2 km from the dargah.

The drive on NH-48

The Ajmer–Jaipur Expressway is a fast, well-maintained four-to-six-lane road. Outside peak hours you can hold 90 km/h almost the whole way. The only slow patch is getting out of Jaipur through Ajmer Road, which can take 25 minutes between 8 AM and 11 AM.

If you are going to Pushkar, do not stop in Ajmer city first. The Pushkar road branches before the city centre, so the driver should take the bypass and come back to the dargah on the return leg. This saves about 40 minutes.

Ajmer Sharif dargah — practical tips

  • The approach road is narrow and crowded; the driver parks nearby and walks you to the entrance
  • Shoes are not allowed inside — carry socks if the marble is hot
  • Fridays and the Urs period are extremely busy; go early morning or after the evening qawwali
  • Photography inside the dargah is restricted
  • Women should carry a head covering; modest clothing is expected
  • Keep valuables close — the lanes are packed

Adding Pushkar

Pushkar is 11 to 15 km from Ajmer depending on where you measure from, and the drive takes 25–35 minutes. The Brahma Temple, Pushkar Lake and the ghats are the main sights. A same-day Jaipur–Ajmer–Pushkar–Jaipur trip is about 10 hours including stops, which is comfortable in a sedan and tight in a hatchback with five people.

Pushkar is dry — no alcohol is sold in the town. During Kartik Purnima the town is packed and the road in can be slow.

What the cab costs

Jaipur to Ajmer one-way starts at ₹1,600 for a hatchback and ₹1,900 for a sedan. Innova is ₹3,100 and Crysta ₹3,700. A round trip with a Pushkar stop is usually priced as a full-day package — ask for that rate, it is cheaper than two one-ways.

Tolls are about ₹100 and are either included or charged at actuals. Parking at the dargah and at Pushkar is extra.
