Jaipur to Agra distance — by road, train and bus

Jaipur to Agra is about 240 km by road and close to the same by rail. A car takes 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours on NH-21 through Dausa and Bharatpur. The train takes longer than most people expect — 4 hours 30 minutes to 6 hours, often at awkward hours — because this is not a high-speed corridor. If you want to stop at Fatehpur Sikri or Abhaneri, the car is the only practical way to do it.

What the drive is actually like

The road runs east from Jaipur on NH-21 through Dausa, then Bharatpur, then Fatehpur Sikri, and finally Agra. The first 100 km out of Jaipur are fast four-lane highway. After Dausa the road narrows in patches and passes through towns, so average speed drops.

Fatehpur Sikri is about 40 km before Agra and sits directly on the route. That is the single best reason to take a car: you can spend 90 minutes at the Mughal capital and still reach Agra by late afternoon. No train or bus on this corridor lets you do that comfortably.

The last 20 km into Agra is ordinary city traffic. If your hotel is on Fatehabad Road or near the East Gate, tell the driver in advance — the approach roads to the Taj are restricted for private cars at certain hours.

Train: slower than you expect

There is no Gatimaan-style fast train between Jaipur and Agra. The direct services, including the Marudhar Express, take around 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours 30 minutes and do not always run at convenient times. Many travellers end up changing at Bharatpur, which adds an hour or more.

The train is still a reasonable choice for a solo traveller on a budget. For two or more people with luggage, the total cost is close to a cab, and the cab drops you at your hotel instead of Agra Fort station.

Bus: cheapest, slowest

RSRTC and private operators run buses from Sindhi Camp in Jaipur. The journey takes 5 hours 30 minutes to 6 hours 30 minutes depending on stops. Buses are cheap, but they will not wait at Fatehpur Sikri and they drop you at the bus stand, not your hotel.

Stops worth making on this route

  • Abhaneri Chand Baori — a 3,500-step stepwell, about 95 km from Jaipur, 20 minutes off the highway
  • Fatehpur Sikri — the abandoned Mughal capital, 40 km before Agra, allow 90 minutes
  • Bharatpur — Keoladeo Ghana bird sanctuary, best from November to February
  • Dausa — a quick chai stop, nothing more

What a Jaipur to Agra cab costs

One-way fares start at ₹2,700 for a hatchback and ₹3,100 for a sedan. An Innova is ₹4,600 and an Innova Crysta ₹5,300. Tolls and Rajasthan/UP state tax are either included in an all-inclusive quote or charged at actuals — the choice is written in your confirmation.

A round trip is usually cheaper than two separate one-way bookings, and it lets the same driver wait while you see Fatehpur Sikri. Ask for the round-trip rate on WhatsApp before you decide.
